Concrete slab thickness: when 4 inches is enough and when to sell 5 or 6

Thickness is the spec homeowners understand least and contractors argue about most. Four inches is the default for a reason, but defaulting to it on a job that needs more is how a driveway cracks under a loaded truck two winters later. Here is how to decide, and how to price the decision so the upgrade is worth selling.
What each thickness is for
4 inches is the residential standard for foot traffic and passenger vehicles. Patios, sidewalks, walkways, standard car driveways, and shed pads. On a properly prepared base, 4 inches with the right reinforcement handles what a normal household puts on it.
5 inches is the sensible upgrade when the slab will see heavier or repeated vehicle loads. A driveway where someone parks a three quarter ton truck, an RV pad, a driveway with a boat trailer on it every weekend. It is also cheap insurance on a long driveway where you would rather not explain a crack.
6 inches is for genuinely heavy loads: garage and shop floors where equipment lives, driveways that see delivery trucks or dumpsters, and slabs supporting anything with a real footprint. It is also common where the subgrade is questionable and you want the slab itself to bridge more.
The honest rule: the base does more work than the extra inch. A 6 inch slab on a soft, poorly compacted subgrade will still fail. Four inches on a well compacted base with proper reinforcement outperforms it. Sell base preparation before you sell thickness.
What the extra inch costs you
Thickness is the one spec that changes both your material cost and your logistics, which is why it needs to be priced deliberately rather than eyeballed.
Start with volume. Going from 4 to 5 inches is a 25 percent increase in concrete. Going from 4 to 6 inches is a 50 percent increase. On a 600 square foot driveway:
- 4 inches: about 8.2 cubic yards with a waste allowance
- 5 inches: about 10.2 cubic yards
- 6 inches: about 12.2 cubic yards
That is the part everyone sees. Here is the part that catches people out: with trucks carrying roughly 10 cubic yards, the 4 inch version is one delivery and both upgrades are two. The step from 4 to 5 inches on this particular driveway does not just add two yards of material, it adds an entire second truck for a fraction of a load.
That is why a flat "add a dollar a square foot for 5 inches" can quietly lose money on the exact jobs where it tips you over a truck boundary. The adder is right on average and wrong at the margin.
Pricing the upgrade
Two things belong in the number when you thicken a slab:
- The material. More yards, straightforwardly.
- The delivery reality. Whether the new volume crosses a truck boundary, and whether the partial load carries a short-load fee.
Labor barely moves. Placing and finishing a 5 inch slab is not meaningfully slower than a 4 inch one, which is good news: most of the upcharge is real cost you can point at, not padding.
A common structure is a per square foot adder on top of your base rate, something like a dollar per foot for 5 inches and two dollars per foot for 6 inches, which is roughly the shape of the default price book in CementQuote. How to sell it without sounding like an upsell
Homeowners hear "thicker" as "more expensive" unless you attach it to something they care about. Attach it to the vehicle:
"Four inches is standard and it is what most driveways get. You mentioned the F-250 and the boat. For that I would go five inches, which is about 600 more, and it is the difference between this lasting and this cracking where the trailer tongue sits."
That is not a hard sell. It is a spec recommendation with a reason and a number, and it takes ten seconds. The customer can say no. Plenty will say yes, because you gave them a concrete reason rather than a menu.
What kills the upsell is not the price, it is the delay. If thickness options mean you have to go home, redo the math, and send a revised quote tomorrow, you will simply not offer it half the time. The upgrade needs to be a toggle you can flip at the driveway while the customer is standing there.
Where thickness meets the rest of the spec
Thickness does not travel alone. Two related calls usually get made at the same time:
- Reinforcement. Fiber, wire mesh, or rebar changes how a slab cracks. On vehicle slabs, rebar and a slightly thinner pour is often a better spend than more inches with no steel.
- Control joints. More concrete does not remove the need for joints at sensible spacing. Thickness buys load capacity, joints manage shrinkage.
